Wow! What a day. Our garden just hosted its first annual spring fling and what a success it was. It seemed like the whole neighborhood turned out for food fun, and community wellness. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect, and the spirit more bright. We started the day off with doughnuts, coffee and a huge overhaul on the frontage, with friends helping turn the long ignored soil to give the garden entrance a facelift.
Garden volunteer Linda Sackin led a lovely team of future picasso’s who turned some boring cardboard into magical works of art.
The final products
Midway through the day, we held a cookout lunch. Potluck style. Folk from all over contributed lovely dishes and things to cook on the grill. Not surprisingly, the smell of barbecued meats really drew the crowds, with Urban Cafe’s Justin Clark leading participating as grillmaster.
Nothing beats the shade of our big oak tree.
Towards the end of the day we joined together to plant some trees in the future food forest. Native missouri PawPaws and apple trees too!
Many thanks to those who volunteered! Their team effort made light work of the tree planting. Future generations will thank you as they enjoy the literal fruits of your labor!
All in all, the event was a huge success. The mood was lively and fun, bringing out folks both familiar and new to the garden to see the wonderful plants growing within and the even more wonderful people keeping it alive.
We hope to see you all again next spring!
